Estate Sale Shopping Etiquette
ROCO would like your shopping experience at our estate sale events to to be a pleasant and memorable experience. To assist newcomers, we have prepared the following information to help you make the most of your visit to one of our events!
🕐 Pre-Sale (Read Ads)
- Check our Ads: ROCO posts advertisements in the El Paso Times (print and online), on Facebook, on Estatesales.net, and on this website. Images are usually available of the items for sale at the event. As courtesy to all of our shoppers and for sake of fairness, we do not give out prices in advance of the sale, nor do we “hold items” prior to the sale. Everything is pretty much first come, first serve. If you see something you like, we encourage to make plans to arrive early to be there before the sale starts. We do have a wish list that customers can sign up for to be notified of specific items they may be interested in at future sales. If you sign up on the list, we will let you know if the item is available, but we still do not release prices.
🕐 Arriving at the Sale
- Check the schedule: Estate sales often list opening times. Arriving early can mean better selection, but respect posted hours — don’t knock on the door before the start time or after the sale ends. Typically, ROCO holds our advertised sales on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Sundays from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
- Parking: Please park in approved, available parking spaces for the event. If no parking is designated, please be courteous. DO NOT PARK in the home’s driveway, or block a driveway to go shopping. Once you have made a purchase, we are happy to assist you with temporary parking as available to load large or heavy items.
- Join the line or sign-in sheet: If there’s a waiting list or number system, follow it. Cutting ahead is considered rude, and our regulars will certainly let you know.
🎒 What to Bring & How to Dress
- Cash is king: Cash is always preferred, though we do accept most major credit cards and/or digital payments. We do normally set minimum purchase requirements for credit card sales to help offset the service charges we must pay to process your card.
- Bring your own bags or boxes: Especially if you expect to buy multiple items. ROCO keeps hold bins on hand for you to place items until you are ready to check out.
- Dress comfortably: Closed-toe shoes are wise — you may be walking through garages, attics, or yards.
- Pets and Service Animals: Service animals and well-behaved pets are welcome, but their behavior is entirely your responsibility. ROCO assumes no liability for any injuries or damages caused as a result of any pets you bring to our event. All animals must controlled by their owner, and be on leash or carried at all times.
🏡 Respecting the Home
- Follow the path: Stay within the open areas of the home. Don’t wander into rooms marked off-limits.
- Handle items carefully: If you pick something up, return it where you found it if you choose not to buy.
- Mind your manners: Speak softly, be courteous to other shoppers, and avoid blocking narrow spaces.
- Rest rooms are generally not available at either our residential or warehouse sales unless clearly advertised. Please scout out and take advantage of nearby public facilities prior to your arrival (gas stations, etc.).
- Never go behind the cashier table! The items we place behind the cashier are there for a reason. If you see something you like that is behind the cashier, ask for help to see or inspect the item.
- Theft is never tolerated, and anyone caught stealing merchandise will be asked to leave and potentially banned from future events. ROCO reserves the right to prosecute any person caught in the act of theft.
💲 Negotiating & Buying
- Ask politely about discounts: Prices are usually firm at the beginning of the sale but may be negotiable later.
- Don’t hide items: This is poor form and unfair to others.
- Don’t pull price stickers: Everything available for sale at our events has a price associated with it, and items that as a collection (i.e., dishes, etc.,) will be clearly marked. Please refrain from trying to build your own “collection” of items by removing prices because you believe they should go together.
- Don’t shop hold bins: As a courtesy to our shoppers, ROCO provides clearly marked hold bins (laundry baskets) to use for placing items they wish to purchase as they continue to shop the event. Please do not remove items from these hold bins.
- Resellers: We appreciate and understand that many of our shoppers are in the business of reselling merchandise. Regardless, ROCO does not accept resale or tax exempt certificates during the sale. All non-motor vehicle purchases are subject to Texas State Sales and Use Tax as applicable at the time of sale.
- Blind Auctions: Occasionally, we hold blind auctions for certain higher value items, where the high bidder wins the bid at the end of the sale. We do not release the current high bid on blind auctions to enable others to bid a higher amount.
- Items belong to our Clients: We do not own any of the merchandise for sale at our events. Accordingly, our clients always reserve the right to change a price, set a reserve, or remove an item entirely from the sale at any time. While we work very closely with our client to manage and limit these activities, please understand that it can happen periodically and that we have no control over such situations. The best way we have found to resolve this is to buy early instead of waiting for a “deal” at the end of the estate sale.
🛻 Pickup & Moving Large Items
- Arrange same-day pickup if possible: We generally request that you are prepared to take the items you purchase at the time of purchase, but understand if you have to go obtain a larger vehicle. We expect you to return the same day, prior to the end of the sale at least 30 minutes before closing time to pick up you large items. ROCO is not responsible for purchased items left behind.
- Bring help and/or tools: ROCO Staff are not responsible for moving heavy furniture or appliances. We recommend that you bring tools to disassemble large items as necessary. ROCO does not provide rope or other tie-down materials for large item purchases.
